What is Individualized Home Supports (IHS) and How Does It Work?

Individualized Home Supports (IHS) are services designed for individuals with disabilities to help maintain and grow their independence while meeting new goals. It’s a completely customizable service centered around you (or your loved one) and what you hope to accomplish.

IHS care can take place in a client’s home, family’s home, or throughout the community and may include support and/or training. It’s a great way to experience new things, connect with the community, and live independently with someone who cares by your side.

Some of the things we do with our in-home care assistance include skill maintenance, help with paperwork, cueing, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, such as cleaning, cooking, and other tasks.

A little support goes a long way, and we’ve seen lives changed when we show up and care the way we do. Whether you’re looking for support for yourself or a loved one, we’d love to learn about your goals and talk about how IHS might look for you!

Types of IHS

  • IHS with training: Individualized Home Supports with training helps you and your family to grow in care and confidence with daily living skills. Learning how to support your loved one is an important step that many families want to take—and sometimes, a little professional guidance is all they need.
  • IHS without training: Individualized Home Supports without training is the daily care part of IHS services. A support staff will spend designated hours with your loved one, providing the services outlined above to help them grow and gain independence.

Who benefits from IHS?

IHS services are a great choice for people who want to live independently but need daily support along the way. It’s typically provided for adults (ages 18 and older) who are living with a:

  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Neurological disability
  • Persistent mental illness

Families want genuine care and support for their loved ones, but often lack the time and resources to provide it themselves. That’s when IHS services are a great fit.

Successful IHS services facilitate growth and help individuals meet previously specified goals. A good IHS worker will be attentive, present, and engaged. You should feel confident in your IHS agency and compassionately cared for by the people who work there.

If you’re worried that your current IHS agency isn’t providing the compassionate care your loved one deserves, it might be time to find a new agency.
